My son was getting his hours in driving down to the ski fields in the Snowy Mountains, NSW, Australia. The countryside is ever-changing, and as I gazed out the passenger window, I could see we had storm clouds approaching. Cumulonimbus clouds are responsible for stormy weather causing rainy and windy conditions, creating hail, thunder,
and lightning. If you're observing this cloud from a distance, what will stand out most is the cloud's impressive height. The cumulonimbus cloud is the only cloud that extends through all three cloud levels. Its base can be very low to the ground, and its top can extend to the highest layer of the troposphere. Magnificent to photograph, and majestic
in their beauty, these images were taken while the car was moving at 80km/h (about 50mph) so there is a softness to the foreground, yet the cloud formations remain sharp
and ominous.
